Design Dilemma - Bathroom/Bedroom Complementing Colors

Q: Dear Ann,
My master bath is a lilac mist, almost a looks like pale blue depending on the light.  My master bedroom is painted in a deep burgundy, almost brown shade and I would like to lighten it up with a color that will blend or complement the bathroom.  What are my best choices?

Baby Nursery Colors

There certainly aren’t too many things more exciting than a new baby.  Preparing for a baby is exciting and fun and sometimes a little scary.  A nursery project is a great way to involve family or friends in the welcoming of a new child.  Small accents or larger projects can be a relaxing way to get ready for the new arrival. Now, there are many different ways one could decorate a nursery. You might choose an accent wall, a border, or even an overall landscape. (Oh-heck, let’s just say babyscape for fun!)

Excitement builds as the Academy Awards approach and like many, the reason I enjoy watching is to find out who will wear what. This is it; one "faux pas" and a celebrity can stay on the worst dressed list for years to come, or the right choice and a barely known starlet can be catapulted to the top.

I can't wait for next Monday to report my take on color trends, but I would like to pay homage to what this event is really about: cinema. The following nominated movies' colors inspired me the most this year. I created a few palettes for each movie according to a scene that moved me the most. Let the colors talk!

Design Dilemma – Newlywed Bedroom Color

Hi!

I am getting married in 7 weeks and my fiancé and I are looking for the right color to paint our bedroom.  I’d like it to be warm, in the yellow family without it being too bright of a yellow.  If a color had a smell, it would smell like almond and vanilla. I’m attaching a picture of the bedding we’re using, but the walls in the picture are lighter than I’d like ours to be. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Hi Erin,

Love that bedding.  Those colors are so cozy and sophisticated at the same time. 

For a deep warm vanilla try looking at:

Prairie Dance 3006-10A (most neutral)	Belle Grove Light Amber 3006-8B
Redstone Dining Room	Honeysuckle Beige 3007-6A (most yellow).

Let us know if these colors are in the right direction. Try some of the sample pots.  It's always good to take a little test run.

Color of the Week: Del Coronado Coastal Peach

Last week’s Color of the Week was Del Coronado Coastal Peach, a vibrant, mid-range, rosy shade. This colors would add depth and verve to any room. Try it with warm ivories like Malted Milk on the ceiling and Snow Cap on the trim. Try accents of warm taupes like Mesa Tumbleweed and Faint Maple for a sophisticated look.

Romantic Bedroom Colors for Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is the perfect incentive to refresh your bedroom and the French boudoir style can be a great source of inspiration.

The color pink can offer a room a unique personality depending on the shade and accent colors. You can create a space that is warm, sensual, seductive or sultry by pairing pink with smoky tans and beiges, silvery whites or powdery browns. These accents are soft, sexy and romantic colors that are also soothing and relaxing.

You could balance the feminine vintage pinks with rich masculine browns.

Color of the Week - Polar Star

Last week's color was Polar Star. This beautiful, chalky gray would offer any room an air of cool elegance. Try it an entry, kitchen or bedroom. Since we were in Southern California last week working on a makeover, I'm going to suggest pairing it with warm colors like Soul Chocolate and Fresh Persimmons as accents and Anthem White on the trim and ceiling.

Design Dilemma - 11-Year-Old's Bedroom

Hello,

My 11-year-old granddaughter’s room has a black and white polka dotted comforter with hot pink accent pillows. Her bedside lamps are black with hot pink trim. What shade of wall color would you suggest she use for this room.

Hi Barbara,

You could go a few directions. My first idea is to try a pale, warm pink to tie everything together. Take a look at Pink Kiss and Pixie Dust.

My other suggestion is a warm white like Cream Delight. This will give a nice neutral backdrop to everything.

If you want to have some fun, try painting a wide, vertical stripe behind her headboard that is the same width as the bed. To do this, take a look at Flower Girl or Sweet Sixteen in a satin finish. Then try Cream Delight on the rest of the walls.

Color of the week: La Fonda Fireberry

Last week’s Color of the Week was La Fonda Fireberry. This festive color is a fiery red. Try this as an accent wall or go for the whole room, but give it some balance by bringing in some cool colors like Oatbran, Ivory Brown or Bleached Shadow.
