I recently spent a few rainy days in Paris being inspired by the subtle shades of the doors of small glittering cafés and the grand entrances of little palaces.

For a very long time, dying black fabrics was one of the most difficult, expensive and labor – intensive techniques in the production of textiles. In the West, black dye works were extremely important as far back as the Middle Ages. During the 16th century, the aristocracy and the wealthy burghers of Spain and the Low Countries (Northern France, Belgium, Netherlands) wore almost exclusively dark colors, especially black.

Gentlemen, we at Beehive are well aware of how difficult it can be to identify one’s color preferences.
However, good references are hanging in your closet - the color of your favorite ties.
Indeed, ties are little palettes - a great source of inspiration when searching that perfect color combination. For walls, a neutral color combined with one or two accent colors.

This past Monday, I happily awoke in Anne and Eve's beautiful and colorful San Francisco home. Their hue-filled decor set the stage for my fist real tour of San Francisco. San Francisco is famous for its colorful Mexican murals and the playfully painted architecture of the District 5 Area. The most famous of these are Haight-Ashbury and The Castro district. The rich heritage of the area, the beautiful flowers and fruit of the place trickle into the residences of the city. The interiors and exteriors enhance the cities natural spectrum to create a cohesive environment.

Dear Beehive,
Can you suggest paint trim and paint for a red brick home with black/gray roof? I was thinking of black trim with a beige for the outer walls. What are your thoughts or suggestions to make our home look great?
Thank you,
Paula A., Burleson, TX

Some houses will do anything to stand out – but on the beautiful island of Hilton Head, it is just the opposite. Homes seem to disappear in their surroundings, discreetly tucked in among grand old trees, sprawling bushes and vines. Like giant chameleons, houses blend with Spanish moss and appear only as reflections in ponds.

What a night it was! After an endless pass of one gorgeously gowned star after another, Kathryn Bigelow, beautifully dressed herself, wins both awards for best director and best movie. There were a lot of blue gowns—perhaps Avatar influenced? But, here are my favorite dresses of the evening paired with some room ideas and color swatches.

By Michele CoppinIf you enjoyed Monday’s post about the architectural beauty of Ghent, then you might also find today’s post interesting as well. One of Ghent's main attractions for tourists and art historians is St. Bavo's Gothic Cathedral. With its 22 altars and mixture of marble and oak, St. Bavo’s is home to the world famous polyptych "The Adoration of the Lamb" also known as "The Mysterious Adam's Apple.”
This Ghent altar piece is one of Belgium's greatest treasures and one of the world's marvels. This monumental master piece (12 feet x 17 feet) is the finest example of Northern Renaissance painting, replete with disguised mystical and overt Christian symbolism woven into realistically portrayed figures and landscapes. Unlike the Italians, Northern painters lacking antiquity for inspiration turned to nature which they embraced in all its detail - inventing an early form of hyper realism.
Painted by the Van Eyck brothers in 1432, this exquisite painting consists of 24 compartmented scenes featuring Christ, Mary, St. John the Baptist, angels, bishops, saints, martyrs, Adam and Eve. The imagery is full of symbolism and double meaning.
