Butterfly Inspired Color Palettes

Most of our hearts go a flutter when we see a butterfly, and happily...butterfly season is upon us. We can’t help but stop and appreciate their delicate energy and beauty.  Their colored wings dance through the landscape and enhance it.

 I recently visited amazing Niagara Falls.  The colors I found there are not what I would have expected! Warm browns and teals with springtime's bold yellows!  Here are some palettes I developed from these surprisingly bold and beautiful colors!

In gardens, all roses naturally go with green. In interiors however, some colors coordinate better assorted than others: reds, peaches, oranges and yellows.

Time to Tend the Roses

The time has come to venture back into the garden for a little spring cleaning and planting.

My two favorite gardens styles are very different. I love French gardens for their elegance, structured motifs and  patterns that echo architectural details like arabesques. Their subtle play of light and shadow create beautiful palettes with gentle color gradations.

Friday Project Series: How to Paint a Faux Stone Pot

I love flowers but I am not crazy about the pots that contain them! Here is a project that “blends” my boring terra cotta pot with the stone patio. I like the way it makes the pot disappear and my new hibiscus, the star of the show. (Hopefully I won’t kill it within two weeks, I unfortunately don’t have a green thumb!) You can use this painting method on many other projects, it works great too for unsightly home foundations that just call for disappearing, just make sure you use a combination of colors that match the surrounding ground.

Every year my friends and family look forward to attending the Philadelphia Flower Show. The Pennsylvania Horticulture Society puts on a grand showcase of color each March to brighten our winter spirits and make way for the wonders of spring.

April Shower Color Inspirations

There is no avoiding rain in April – it's just part of the landscape. While April showers may be a nuisance, they can also be very inspirational; the  liquid colors of rain work particularly well in bathrooms. Balance misty hues with sunshine-esque pops of color.

With the beautiful weather that has been spoiling us for the past week, I have really been enjoying taking my sweet dog, Luna, on her early morning walk. For me, April and October are the most beautiful months of the year as far as color is concerned. Inspiration is everywhere! I have taken a few pictures with my cell phone and paired them with palettes ideas. Enjoy!

Friday Project Series: How to Paint a Sky Mural

 Winter is almost over! March is the month of escape--the month when I really want to spend more time outside. I recently painted this mural for a client of mine who spends hours in her windowless home office. There are many ways to bring the outdoors in, but I find this technique of painting a sky on your wall is really easy. The results are soft, with a dream-like quality. It's all about layering.
